FOR PROSPECTIVE AND NEW STUDENTS
Shad Wenzlaff has been teaching piano privately for over three decades.
Shad teaches lessons on both the west and east sides of Madison.
Students receive personalized lessons, unique lesson plans -
lessons are not just “one size fits all” from lesson or method books
Each student is taught according to their unique ways of knowing, learning styles, and events are appropriate given their progress and goals.
Shad’s studio performs regularly. Students enter festivals, and are often featured in the Sonatina Festival Recital, Honors Festival Recitals, in recital at the WYSO Center, and in Shad’s studio recital space on west university ave. Students have entered WMTA District Auditions and advanced to regional competition. Shad’s students have won accolades for their creativity in piano compositions through the WMTA Young Composer Festival, and in past years MAME (Madison Area Music Educators) and MAPTA (local) Piano Composition Festivals. Shad has chaired many of these events, and is active with MAME and most recently as the State MTNA Composition Festival chairperson. In November 2025, Shad launched a music event THE SUITE AUTUMN FESTIVAL to highlight baroque-era and baroque-inspired repertoire for youth pianists.
Our recitals in MAY 2026 will be held in Studio 4 at Shad’s west side studios - Studio Share Madison 5003 W University Ave.
As an adjudicator and presenter, Shad keeps up with research in the discipline of piano pedagogy and creative learning. Shad presented “Beyond the Right Turn of Phrase” at the 2025 WI State WMTA Conference.
Shad maintains a waitlist - currently, there are openings for early Monday afternoon lessons at the east location
Thursday (daytime) lessons at both the east and west locations for adult students.
Saturday late am lesson available at the west location.

I do not publish my rate on this website - the reason for this is threefold:
Tuition is billed by the term. Each term includes a unique number of private and group classes.
Tuition varies by duration. A beginner who is just starting may need a 30 or a 45 minute lesson, depending upon my assessment at the trial lesson. An advanced student may need a 60 minute lesson. Adult students may require a unique schedule - so I don’t publish my rate. Generally speaking, my hourly rate is not an entirely accurate assessment of tuition since many materials are included after the first year of study, and each of my students receives benefits such as tickets to SUITE OF SEASONS festival concerts at no additional fee, I never charge additional fees for studio recitals - they are always included with tuition (many studio teachers in the Madison area charge $20+ to participate in recitals); all of my students are invited to arrive 15 minutes early to lesson and practice i/on a practice studio / piano. These are perks not necessarily offered by other studios - and they are all included in tuition fees.
I’d prefer to set up a meet and greet - and if tuition is truly a concern, i.e. financial limitations are very real - let’s talk about this. If I am truly the best fit for your child, or for an adult student, and price is a factor, I have several ways to help students offset tuition fees. One of these is a youth piano scholarship opportunity that students can apply for through MAME - Madison Area Piano Teachers Associated. So let’s have that conversation! [That said, tuition is due at the start of the term, approximately four times per year & I charge a competitive rate for similar studios in the Madison area.]
AT YOUR MEET AND GREET LESSON
All students must own an instrument at home on which to practice. In our initial email correspondence, students will be asked to provide a JPEG of the instrument, details regarding the instrument, and notes regarding where the instrument is located in the home. Additionally, if a student is age 12 and under, one parent/guardian will be designated a “practice companion” - this parent/guardian must attend either the first 5 minutes of each lesson, or the last 5 minutes of each lesson (preferably the last 5 minutes) AND observe/guide practice at home not less than three times between each lesson.
If you have had prior lessons - Shad will ask students to play a piece using music, or if from memory please bring the print copy of your piece. Students will be asked to sight-reading, and will be given a brief 7-12 minute lesson on a concept that is age / developmentally appropriate. All students who have had lesson previously must provide contact information for all previous teachers within the past 36 months. Shad Wenzlaff maintains a high level of ethical standards, and contacts previous teachers to learn about student experiences, lesson materials, and the previous teachers’ teaching style. Shad Wenzlaff reserves the right to refuse to accept students who, if they have taken lessons previously, are unable to provide contact information for previous teachers.
If you have NOT had prior lessons - Shad will offer a 15 minute trial lesson, and spend 15-20 minutes introducing my studio to a parent/guardian, and answer any questions you may have.
