Level 1 - Exercise 2

Lesson Plan - Level 1 - Exercise 2

Use the left side of this sheet in lesson. For students ages 6-7 1/2, or who may need assistance (for whatever reason), model "drawing" each note, one by one - first draw the whole note, explain that "there is no stem", and have the student draw it in the box on the right - explain that it's the "longest" length (FN1) (avoid using the word "duration" until age 8-9), and that you wanted the "longest" on the right.
Then use a pointer to identify the "stems" - look at these stems, these are "stems pointing up" - have them draw the half note, then the quarter, then assist with the eighth and sixteenth. It may be too much to ask for independence in understanding eighth and sixteenth at ages 6-7 1/2, which is why Exercise 3 is designed without eighth and sixteenth notes. Exercise 3@ (alternate) is designed for an older student, or for the teacher who would like to exercise rhythmic subdivisions.

fn 1

this footnote explains the idea of "longest" - in this method, the idea of "measuring" things is explored as a unifying concept. The use of the word "longest" is deliberate to a cross-connected curriculum.
